BBC Singers - Friday 09 July
Time: 18:00
The Festival’s closing tribute to Heitor Villa-Lobos is his Bachianas brasileiras No 9 – composed in 1945 and, like its sibling works, brilliantly blending aspects of Bach’s music with the sounds and rhythms of Brazil itself.
O Centro do Excêntrico do Centro do Mundo by Miguel Azguime, a leading figure among today’s Portuguese composers, is based on words by mathematician and cosmographer Pedro Nunes, whose Tratado da sphera com a Theorica do Sol e da Lua (Treaty about the Sphere with Theory of the Sun and the Moon) of 1537 was a product of Portugal’s great era of navigation and exploration.
