Accordion virtuoso Renato Borghetti, a superstar amongst the new folk musicians from Rio Grande do Sul in Southern Brazil, performs his only UK gig this year at the Festival. The charismatic gaúcho has revised, adapted and modernized many of the native sounds of his home country. His shows mix traditional forms such as Milonga, Chacarera and Chamamé with elements of jazz, tango and chamber music.
“Borghettinho” has been recording CDs for more than 20 years. He has shared the stage with Stephane Grapelli, Ron Carter and Hermeto Pascoal and is the first Brazilian musician to achieve a golden record with purely instrumental music. Gauchos, his first European CD, was released by the Vienna label Quinton Records in 2005, nominated for the “Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik”. Gaitaponto.Com was nominated for a Grammy Latino in 2005.
Borghetti’s most recent work FANDANGO! was awarded the Premio Açorianos in Porto Alegre as best CD of the year and it was also nominated for a Grammy Latino.
