The gallery was established in 1885 to house and display the paintings and sculptures belonging to the Corporation of London. Located in the historic heart of the City next to the medieval Guildhall, the present building opened to the public in 1999. One of the many paintings on show at Guildhall, is Britain's largest independent oil painting, John Singleton Copley's The Defeat of the Floating Batteries at Gibraltar (Sept 1782).
