The Mercers' Company has been settled on the site of its present Hall at least since the end of the 14th Century. The first Mercers' Hall was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. The third and present Mercers' Hall opened in May 1958. The basic plan of the present Hall follows that of the second, with an Ambulatory and Chapel on the ground floor, behind a façade of Cheapside shops, with the Livery Hall and other ceremonial rooms above.
