Mozart Serenata Noturna
Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings
Directed by Alexandra Wood
Tim Gunnell timpani
Two serenades that chart a journey from night to day. Mozart’s Serenata Notturna is one of his most distinctive pieces, written for string orchestra and timpani, and for music that was written to accompany night-time, outdoor festivities full of musical inspiration and imagination.
Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, written almost a hundred years later, was inspired by Mozart’s Serenades. One of Tchaikovsky’s most heartfelt pieces shows how the serenade had moved from the background of night-time parties to the bright lights of the concert platform.
