You’ve always wanted to see London. It would be an excellent opportunity for your children to visit a foreign country and learn some history. It’s going to be a fun trip, but only if you plan ahead.

Passport

You must have a passport when traveling abroad. You may need to get your passport at least six months or more ahead since some countries require this. Children under the age of 14 must have both parents’ consent to the application. Parental consent may be required for children 14 to 17 as well. The child must be present when applying for his or her passport, and the application form is submitted at this time. You will need to provide proof of your child’s U.S. citizenship, as well as a statement of birth (birth certificate, birth abroad, previous passport, naturalization certificate). The child’s relationship to the parent must be provided, typically by using the same documentation as for U.S. citizenship. Parents must also provide identification. Your child will also need two valid passport photos and their social security number.

Immunizations

Be sure to check out the country you intend to visit. Some countries require immunizations or testing that must be done prior to your visit after the Covid-19 pandemic. Obtain a Certificate of Vaccination that lists all the vaccinations you have received in case it is asked for while you are abroad. Talk to your doctor to make sure that both you and your children have received the required vaccinations and to be assured that your children are medically able to receive all the required vaccinations.

Fees

Not only will you have to pay for your passport, but expect to pay immigration and customs fees as part of the cost of your plane ticket. It is also possible that you may be required to pay departure fees when you are exiting the foreign country. Plan ahead so that you can cover these expenses.

Going Abroad

Before you leave, make sure you are aware of any warnings or alerts active in the country you’re planning to visit as well as the local laws you must abide. File your itinerary with someone back home so that they can be contacted in case of emergency. It may be a good idea to buy travel insurance in case you have an accident or some other emergency that will not be covered by your regular policy. Planning will make the trip an enjoyable one.
